CGI Math

At Gilbert School, we are committed to providing innovative, student-centered learning. In partnership with the University of California, Irvine, we have integrated Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) into our mathematics curriculum.

What is CGI? CGI is based on over 30 years of research showing that children bring their own mathematical understanding to the classroom. CGI lessons build on this knowledge, allowing students to solve problems in ways that make sense to them. Students discuss their methods and ideas, fostering meaningful connections among mathematical concepts.

Why CGI?

  • Research-Backed: Studies show that CGI students significantly outperform their peers in problem-solving and number facts.

  • Conceptual Understanding: Students grasp the "why" and "how" of math, not just the "what."

  • Diverse Approaches: CGI emphasizes multiple methods of problem-solving rather than a single "correct" way.

Parent Engagement: We value the role of parents as essential partners in education. Our partnership with UCI has fostered meaningful opportunities for parents to engage in and support their child's mathematical development.

Through CGI, we aim to build a strong mathematical foundation for every student, preparing them for future success.
